Gyu Han Lee "The Pattern Is the Pattern" Furniture

 

Seoul-based artist Gyu Han Lee is known for transforming your average Nike box into not-so-average pieces of furniture, and now the world has another chance to see his pieces up close.

Following on from the artist’s “ON MY SEAT” exhibition at 003archive in Seoul last September, comes his latest work titled “The Pattern Is the Pattern.” This presentation will be showcased at Gallery Document in Seoul, offering pieces such as Nike boxes turned into chairs, benches, coffee tables, shelving units, and much more.

 

“The Pattern Is the Pattern” offers furniture that looks as if it’s still in its development phase, as the box’s branding appears to give each piece an industrial aesthetic. It’s an exercise in exploring the intersection between something industrialized and something handcrafted because the pieces exhibited are both, further examining form and function, commercialization, and everyday life.

Gyu Han Lee says that the exhibition title is taken from Netflix’s Maniac, adding that it represents “the moment when the fragments of everyday life that seemed meaningless are repeated and constitute a pattern of life.”
