MoMA x Vans

Vans has teamed up with the Museum of Modern Art for a series of special edition products this fall. The artful range of footwear, apparel and accessories feature art represented in the museum’s collection, chosen by Vans in collaboration with MoMA. The artists spotlighted in the new collaboration reflect the diversity of MoMA’s collection, with artworks by Salvador Dalí, Vasily Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Jackson Pollock, Lybov Popova and Faith Ringgold.

Kicking off the collection this month is the Dalí-inspired Vans Old Skool Twist. One of the seminal painter’s best-known paintings, The Persistence of Memory (1931), covers the medial and lateral panels of the shoe, turning the classic style into a surrealist piece of art. For a more abstract design, Kandinsky’s Orange (1923) lithograph — which the artist made while teaching at the German Bauhaus school of art and design — has been interpreted on the Classic Slip-On. A Vans long sleeve and pullover boast the same geometric design.

The range wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the Impressionist movement. Monet’s Water Lilies (1914-1926) wrap around the Vans Authentic, while a hat, fleece and backpack feature the same serene scene of the timeless motif. Along with the artwork-inspired items, the initial release also includes a 10-piece assortment of MoMA branded footwear, apparel and accessories. A colorful interpretation of Vans’ iconic checkerboard takes over ComfyCush Old Skool and Era silhouettes, as well as a selection of apparel.

Beginning September 30, the first release will go live on Vans’ and MoMA Design Store’s websites, as well as at both of their in-store locations. A second artist release will launch in November.
