Back in May, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban announced a contest allowing fans to design the team’s next uniforms, which he plans to debut for the 2015-16 season. Thousands of fans submitted entries through the Mavs’ official website and crowdSPRING.com. Some were great, some not so much.
While underwhelmed with the design, I am more critical of the design process. As someone who makes their living off the sale of creative work, I am fundamentally opposed to the "crowd sourcing" of creativity. Design contests degrade the value of true creative work. Cuban and Mavs can say that they were "engaging their fans", but this is just a large company making money (jersey sales) off the free work of designers. I also happen to think they got what they paid for it...Not much!
