When Marty McFly’s Nike MAG became a reality back in 2011 – 1,500 pairs of “the greatest shoe never made” were released via eBay auction to raise money for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, ultimately bringing in more than $6 million USD – the Back to the Future II kicks were a near-perfect re-creation of the 1989 classic, albeit without one key detail: self-lacing “Power Laces.” However, the seemingly futuristic technology – which existed in the film’s fictionalized version of 2015 – looks like it could indeed come to fruition. Over the weekend, design legend Tinker Hatfield made an appearance at the Jordan Brand Flight Lab in New Orleans for 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend. When asked if “Power Laces” could become a reality, the man himself answered “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!” Whether the technology could appear on a retro release of the Nike MAG itself or a brand new silhouette remains to be seen.
